A Perspective on Coaching

Let's say that one of your key people is in difficulties – performance-wise. Results are either falling off, or simply not where you need them to be. It isn't that (s)he doesn't know what is needed, or how to get the results expected. As far as you can see there are no insurmountable obstacles in the way. Quality of performance just isn't there.

Let me assume that you are genuinely dedicated to the relationship and also that you're committed to the success of both the organization and the person. Does it make sense, for the good of the Company and also for the dignity of the individual, to attempt to help them? If so, then coaching could be the answer, but let's see.

Firstly, would you be prepared to accept that behavior can be changed, and that if there's a will, there's a way. If not, let's stop right now. I believe that there have been enough clear demonstrations that people can change when they want to do so.

Next, does it make sense that most behavior is 'driven' by an appreciation of the consequences of either action or inaction. If consequences are understood and sufficiently compelling, then all kinds of actions become viable.

Coaching represents an investment in people. One has to believe that applied effort could result in more desirable outcomes. These results may well come later, but the coaching work is required to be done right now. Can you afford to wait for success? In making that investment, the most effective leverage available is personal support, encouragement, or positive reinforcement. The more leverage, the greater will be the return for the effort invested. Are you sufficiently confident to proceed?

Finally, at the core of all activity is patience. The effort invested needs to be thorough, detailed, even pains-taking, and follow through is essential. Will you be prepared to see it through?
