Staying in Touch The Strategic Thinker 'You cannot use the same thinking processes to resolve problems as those which created the problems in the first place' - a statement attributed to Albert Einstein. Most of the time, we are not conscious of our thinking processes. We are 'operators', we respond to the needs confronting us, we take action, and the process seems seamless and natural. It is this operational or tactical thinking that leads us, inevitably, into the many complex crises and convoluted relationships that we are now facing. Some wise person once observed too, that when you are in the swamp up to your keester in alligators, it's difficult to remember that the purpose of the shovel is to drain the swamp. We are overwhelmed with the needs of the moment, and there appears to be no relief in sight. Yet there is an option. Strategic Thinking is an alternate perspective. It brings fresh light and different relationships to bear on the issues. Taking a different approach, changing the 'rules of the game', can lead to solutions which weren't visible previously. Used pro-actively, Strategic Thinking can assist with the identification, anticipation and avoidance of potential issues that could complicate our life in the future. Strategic Thinking is a higher level approach to issue identification and resolution. It enables a concurrent view of the start line, the goal line, and all the relevant features in between, and at the same time. It's like looking at an aerial photograph, or down onto a tabletop model of a piece of terrain that we must navigate. We are able to see the 'big picture'. Relationships between the various components become clearer, options become more apparent, consequences are more obvious and priorities are more compelling. By taking time out to get 'on top' of the situation, we are able to appreciate it as a different reality. We focus on our starting position, on the desired outcome or results, and on the options and challenges that intervene, before we commit to action. To achieve success, all we need is a strategic perspective, the opportunity to focus our thinking on the larger picture, the ability to think strategically. How well prepared are you? Have you acquired the vital skill sets yet? Here's a useful Diagnostic to assist you to discover your current competencies in this area. It is a 'learnable skill' and the first step is to recognize where you are now. Go to the Responses and Scoring page only when you've completed the Assessment. This was a tough assignment. Very few are taught the necessary skills to handle situations strategically - we live in a 'tactical' world. Future success will belong to those who have developed the critical thinking skills and who are proficient at dealing with ideas, as well as people and/or situations. The Leader is (s)he who can see the path ahead and move forward with well-based confidence. Is this the time for you to invest some focused time and effort in your future? ![]()
