I read recently that "maintaining our sanity in today's world depends on our perspicacity and our ability to anticipate the increasing spiral of changes."

Yikes! Here's me having enough trouble coping with today's changes .... and now someone thinks that I should be anticipating those which might come. The mere thought boggles the mind....not to mention what it does to body and spirit.

While I was reflecting on the matter I had a call from my daughter, saying that after eight years out west with ever diminishing job opportunities, she was considering moving back to Toronto....did I have any thoughts on the matter?

Well, of course I do.....and before I could say "hey, it'll be great to have you closer" I began considering any number of "straw men", "what if scenarios".......but I caught myself just in time. Twice over that is.

First, I was bemused by how far my perspectives had shifted within a matter of a few short minutes. The very thought of contemplating all the potential changes in my life was crazy making, yet when it came to my daughter's life, I had all the answers. Such arrogance!

Second, what advice to give?

Where to start? There were thoughts aplenty! But then again, is advice what she was really looking for? Or, was it simply support? Emotional support. The knowledge that we would "be there" for her in her times of 'insanity'.

It's tough being a parent - a boss, a colleague, a friend. We want the best for others. We worry for them. We worry about them. But why?

When I look back on my life and consider all the risks I have taken, things have always turned out one of two ways ...either I've found a firm footing - or I've learned to fly! How about you?
