Amanda's Analects (an·a·lects..selected miscellaneous written passages) Decisions Decisions Decisions
Does a day, even an hour, go by without each one of us having to make some decision or another. Some are big, some small. Some significant, others inconsequential. Or are they? Decisions! I'm not sure whether it's the fact of making the right decision that's important , or the need to feel that it's the right decision that's being made.. And, if it's a case of "feeling" that it's the right decision we're making, why don't we simply go with our intuition. I did that for a good number of years. Go with my gut, that is. And it served me very well indeed, thank you very much. Problem was, I couldn't explain "rationally" why I had come to the decisions I had. And, in business, that doesn't count for much. So, notwithstanding the fact that I was generally deemed intelligent, sensible, practical - a contributor, I set about becoming more systematic, more logical with my decision making process. Oh, the agony of it all. The more research I did, the more was needed. The longer I looked at the alternatives, the more options there seemed to be. And "improvements" to current preferences seemed to appear just as I was finally about to make the decision. It was exhausting - physically, emotionally, mentally, even spiritually. But the process did have one pay off - it gave credence to my procrastination! Joking aside, I was never very sure that I'd come to any better decisions. How does one know, at the time of making the decision, that it is the right one? - a gut feel, did I hear you say?! Well in my experience, you don't. In fact, I'm tempted to agree with Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Anne O'Hare McCormick when she says "The percentage of mistakes in quick decisions is no greater than in long-drawn-out vacillation - and the effect of decisiveness itself "makes things go" and creates confidence". I know all decision processes are not long and drawn out....but in today's turbulent times, when business demands that we "be in the moment", "makes things go" - is there not another way? Am I saying, go with your gut? Well, yes! At worst it will steer you wrong as
often as that rational, logical approach of yours.
And anyway, with all that energy you'll have left,
you'll be able to get into even more "trouble"!
