Amanda's Analects (an·a·lects..selected miscellaneous written passages) The Perfect Day
A three day weekend – the very thought of it sent me into raptures. Time for errands, time for family and friends – and even some time for me. What a treat! But how would I spend this precious time? What would make it “the perfect day”. Well, not having the answer right at hand I decided that the least I could do would be to start off on the right foot – and “schedule” the day as mine. Designating it my day gave me 'permission' to do with it as I wished. So, this morning came. A beautiful sunny morning; clear blue skies, clean crisp air, birds chirping their cheerful chants. I began to contemplate my perfect day. What would this perfect day be like? What would I do? Where did I want to be? And, with whom? What had brought me joy in the past? Would it do so again? Thoughts came slowly to mind. There were distractions a plenty – day old newspapers, hot cups of coffee and the sweet strains of soulful music! And yet, as the day moved on, my frustration was growing. Not before time I caught myself in one of my old ruts … spoiling “what is” by dwelling on what could have been. Uncertainty was compounded by indecision; frustration by expectation. How could this be? Today was to be “my” day -- and I was blowing it! The truth is, I've made today everything it has been – and also,
everything it hasn't! Pretty much the story of my life …
how about you?
