Who matters?

I lost a good friend last night. A very special lady. She was principled, determined and tenacious yet witty, warm and worldly. As sharp of mind as she was warm of heart. Someone whom I shall remember for as long as I live.

It got me thinking about people. Friend and foe. Big and tall, slim and small. The rich, the famous, the notorious. The important people in life.

I tried remembering these “important” people. Tried to recall who had won last year's Heisman trophy, the Miss World contest, a Nobel or the Pulitzer. Perhaps something a little less lofty would be easier. I searched my memory for the identity of those who had kept me up so late the night of the Oscars. And I failed miserably.

Funny thing is, yesterday's headliners are no second-rate achievers. They're the best in their fields. But applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. And accolades and certificates are buried along with their owners.

So, who does get remembered.

Well, if you're anything like me, you'll remember those who've helped you through difficult times; taught you something worthwhile; had confidence in you. You'll recall those with whom you enjoy spending time; and the few who make you feel appreciated and special.

The people who make a difference in our lives are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones who have cared. My friend Joan was one.

I spoke of having lost a good friend. I've not “lost” her. She'll be with me forever. After all, she was truly important. She knew how to make others feel special.

Do you?
