Amanda's Analects (an·a·lects..selected miscellaneous written passages) For better - and for worse.
When we spend time in challenging situations in the close company of others, we are seen as we truly are - for better and for worse. How easy it is to remember the worst in others; how difficult to see the best in ourselves. And yet, what greater gift is there than to be seen and accepted for who we really are. Most of us will have experienced times when others have seen our "true self", when we could not see it for ourselves. We fondly remember those very special people who have known us in our tougher moments - yet have seen our potential and our hidden gifts at the same time. People who have drawn us out, nurtured and acknowledged us. And it's felt wonderful. Each of us can also remember all too well the many who have not been so loving, so open and encouraging. Those who have not seen us, our depth, our hidden qualities and talents. Those who have had neither the time nor the inclination to look beyond the immediate, the obvious. Seeing others as they are - and acknowledging the best in them - doesn't take that much time. Nor does it take much effort. But it does mean looking at things through different eyes. It means looking beyond the pressures of the moment to see beneath the surface of an individual's defensiveness, their sarcasm, their shyness and their insecurity. How often do we take the time to reflect on the individuals in our life. To consider who they really are, what makes them unique, and what makes them a gift to the world. We all have the ability to see the good, the truth, the gifts. We can even take that moment in time to acknowledge, appreciate and value them. Whether we do, or not, is up to us. Who knows, if we succeed, we too may be
remembered as one of those special individuals who
made a positive difference in someone's life.
