Connections

Have you ever been in a crowded room, yet felt the loneliness? A sense of ‘alone-ness'? Alternatively, do you remember those occasions when you felt ‘as one' with another?

If we believe Woody Allen, "Eighty percent of success is just showing up". Yet often, ‘showing up' is less than rewarding. And we, as managers, often complain about our staff , saying that "we see the bodies, but it's as if no one's home".

Within business the focus has always been on the bottom line, the market, the competition. Resources - money, manpower and materials - were cited as making the difference to an organization's success.

More recently there's been the claim that organizations run on information. But don't organizations really run on relationships? Haven't they always.

Many of us join an organization to make a contribution, to be a part of a growing or successful entity. But is that all? Many "home-based" or "virtual" workers will tell you that what they miss most is the sense of community - the connectednesss with others.

How often we speak of needing to ‘contact' someone, to be 'in touch with' them. But is this enough? How much better things would be if we were to really ‘connect' with one another.

Thinking of someone in particular? Go do it!
